ONE Championship 32 results: Amnuaysirichoke gets win in non-title headliner

After losing its scheduled main event between Ben Askren and Luis Santos just hours before the show began, ONE Championship bumped a non-title flyweight “superfight” between Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke and Yago Bryan Farias de Morais to headliner status.

Although Amnuaysirichoke (6-0) is the current ONE Championship strawweight titleholder, he was booked for a non-title affair at 125 pounds opposite Farias de Morais (3-1). Even without the belt on the line and fighting outside his natural weight class, the champion emerged victorious with a unanimous decision after five rounds.

Farias de Morais’ success in the bout was limited largely to the opening round. He landed some quick, stiff strikes and looked to have a solid understanding of the necessary range and reaction needed to land with consistency.

Amnuaysirichoke didn’t allow that to last long, though. He made adjustments to his strategy during the first round break and that decision paid off. He upped the output of his jab and diversified the range of his kicks, which immediately started to neutralize his opponent’s offense.

Despite being outskilled and outworked in the stand up, Farias de Morais stood toe-to-toe for 25 minutes and held his own without being decisively blown out. Amnuaysirichoke is a championship-caliber athlete for a reason, though, and showed why by being the more aggressive and effective fighter.

Amnuaysirichoke added a sixth victory to his undefeated record with the winning performance and is likely to return to 115 pounds for his next fight so he can defend his ONE Championship belt.

“He’s a good opponent, but I trained for this and that’s why I came out with the win,” Amnuaysirichoke said through an interpreter in his post-fight interview.

Despite advanced age, Boku pulls off upset of Overall

Kotetsu Boku

He may be 38, but Kotetsu Boku (23-10-2) can still get it done inside the cage. The MMA veteran pulled off a co-main event upset with a TKO of highly touted featherweight Major Overall (6-2).

It was clear soon after the opening bell that the fight was no mismatch. Boku and Overall went back-and-forth for the first round with neither man able to gain a significant edge over the other in striking or grappling.

The competitive trend continued at the start of the second round, but it didn’t take long for Boku to find his groove. He connected with a hard right hand that dropped Overall and marked the beginning of the end.

Overall did his best to survive the flurry and even managed to get back to his feet, but another clean shot to the chin from Boku forced him into a defensive shell and the referee opted to save him from absorbing any further punishment.

The victory gave Boku his first two-fight winning streak since 2012 while Overall had his four-fight winning streak snapped for his first defeat in nearly four years.

19-year-old Angela Lee picks up historic submission

Undefeated strawweight Angela Lee (3-0) added another impressive submission victory to her undefeated record when she locked up the first twister in ONE Championship history at the expense of Natalie Gonzales Hills (2-3).

The fight was fast-paced from the outset as Lee and Hill met in the center of the cage and swung big strikes. It didn’t take long for the action to spill the ground, where both fighters earned an advantage with the help of some crafty grappling.

In the middle of a scramble, however, Lee managed to get in the somewhat awkward position needed to start applying the twister. She executed the move well and contorted Hill’s body to the point where she was left with no choice but to tap out.

The victory moved Lee to 3-0 under the ONE Championship banner with all of those wins coming by first-round submission. At just 19, Lee said she’s happy her dedication to the sport is resulting with triumphant performances.

“Recently a lot of things have been happening in my life; good things, changes,” Lee said in her post-fight interview. “All of my sacrifices and hard work is paying off and I’m just overjoyed.”

Subora unable to withstand Ngalani’s power

Alain Ngalani

In a rare ONE Championship heavyweight contest, Alain Ngalani (2-2) needed a mere 69 seconds to score a painful knockout of Igor Subora (5-3) with the help of some vicious strikes.

It didn’t take long for Ngalani to get the upper hand. He landed a thumping body kick in the opening seconds of the bout and immediately showed off his killer instinct and pursued the finish.

Subora attempted to retreat and recover, but Ngalani’s attack was too fierce. He knocked Subora to the ground and continued to batter him with strikes until the referee intervened with the stoppage.
