Nick ‘The Power’ Ring Turns Hero; Stops and Captures Muggers in Canada

They soon may have to change Nick ‘The Promise’ Ring to Nick ‘The Power’ Ring after pulling off some super heroics to stop a group of thugs in Canada this week.

Ring is just over a month away from his rematch with Court McGee at UFC 149 in Calgary, but first decided to show off the ‘S’ on his chest and help out some people in the midst of an assault and mugging on Wednesday night.

It was about 9pm when Ring exited his local Starbucks where he picked up some coffee, and as he got into his car he noticed something in front of him that was just wrong.

“I was in my car and I was just pulling out of the parking lot and I see at a bus stop across the street there’s this group of thugs beating up on a boy and a girl. There’s about 10 guys and 1 girl in this group of thugs, and the girl was beating up on this other girl victim, and the guys are like beating on this guy and holding him back. It was horrible. The girl was kneeing the other girl in the face, it was 10 against 2 of them, and these guys were completely defenseless,” Ring told MMAWeekly.com about the incident on Thursday.

While the danger of the situation may cause some to flee or others to just call the police, Ring wasn’t having any of that.

“I jumped right out of my car, right away. I saw what was going on, it was wrong, and I had to stop it right away,” said Ring.

The former middleweight Ultimate Fighter competitor rushed to the aid of the boy and his girlfriend as their attackers continued the assault. Once help arrived however, the group of thugs wasn’t too interested in confronting the 185lb Canadian rushing their way.

“As I got out of the car, the guys they all ran away. They ripped the girl’s backpack off of her, and ripped it away from her and ran off with it. Basically, they beat them up and robbed them. I wasn’t going to stand around and watch that happen,” Ring said.

So along with another person who rushed in to help stop the attack, Ring checked on the victims to make sure they were physically okay but he wasn’t finished just yet.

“So me and him we check on the victims, to make sure they were okay, and they were hysterical as could be and we just said ‘let’s go get these guys’,” said Ring.

Ring and the other man rushed down the street, pursuing the assailants by foot as the fled the scene of the attack.

As they caught up to them, Ring tackled one of the attackers and pinned him to the ground while his friends stopped in a stunned silence at what had just occurred.

“We ran them down and we took one guy down and we held him there. I got on the phone and called the cops and the other assaulters they were standing around asking us to let the guy go. Yeah right! I said you guys are going to jail,” Ring shouted.

“They tried to run away while I was on the phone with the cops so I chased them for 3 or 4 blocks and they lost me in some houses, but luckily from my direction the cops were able to catch them.”

Unfortunately a couple of the criminals did flee police capture, but most of the group of eleven assailants were caught by police and arrested. While he wasn’t necessarily trying to play hero, Ring just couldn’t let the perpetrators get away with assault, battery and robbery especially when they outnumbered the victims in such a heinous manner.

“What a group of cowards, I’ve got to say. They beat up on this little guy and this little girl that are defenseless, it’s 10 on 2, and then there are two of us, me and this other guy and we stand up to them and they run away like little cowards,” Ring stated.

“I’m glad I got to help them. I mean the damage is already done but at least the assaulters can get brought to justice, is the way I think of it. I felt bad for them. I’m on record as a witness, I will be going to court and I will be pointing these guys out. I want to make sure they get what’s coming to them.”

On a side note, once all of the attackers were in custody one of them offered to fight Ring one on one at any time, obviously unaware of the extreme disadvantage he would face against a UFC middleweight. Still, Ring admits he gladly accepted, although noted the attacker only made this offer after the police had arrived.

No fight actually occurred however.

For his part, Ring says he saw the victims being checked out by paramedics and obviously they were in a state of shock. He just hopes he did his part to show that good guys still exist, and passes along a message to criminals that you never know who might be around when bad things happen.

“That whole scene it was horrible to watch and it disgusts me. It made me sick to my stomach to see it, and I’m not going to stand idly by and watch it happen,” said Ring. “You make sure the bad guys get caught.”
