My UFC Pound-for-Pound March Madness Bracket (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

By Nick Meyer,

The UFC continues to build its brand and to develop MMA stars, but the top of the list remains dominated by the organization's two megastars: Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre.

The meteoric rise of Jon Jones at light heavyweight has challenged its supremacy as the undisputed top two pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, but is Jones good enough to be considered better at this point in time?

Here is my March Madness bracket for a hypothetical pound-for-pound top 16 tournament in the UFC (with a few classic March surprises thrown in), where the vast majority of the top MMA talent now resides:

Round One

Rivalry Region

1. Anderson Silva vs. 4. Chael Sonnen:

Scheduled to face each other soon, Sonnen seems to have talked his way into another matchup with Silva. Sonnen will land his fair share of takedowns again, but it's hard to see Silva losing in Brazil. Silva is the better pound-for-pound fighter, for sure.

2. Dominick Cruz vs. 3. Urijah Faber:

Faber makes up for a slight frame with excellent all-around skills, and he and Cruz are slated to fight for a third time after their Ultimate Fighter stint. Cruz still has the edge, however, and will remain atop these rankings at bantamweight.

All-Business Region

1. Jose Aldo vs. 4. Shogun Rua:

The two Brazilian legends are both superb fighters in their own right in a region that contains true martial artists who work harder than just about anyone else at their craft, but Aldo is more consistent, albeit against lesser competition. Still, Shogun is not one to underestimate, and he scores the upset here.

2. Frankie Edgar vs. 3. Carlos Condit:

Edgar epitomizes the spirit of a great "pound-for-pound" fighter as he regularly beats bigger guys. Condit is a devastating all-around fighter in his own right, but Edgar's heart scores him a close win in this region.

Phenom Region

1. Jon Jones vs. 4. Renan Barao:

Vitor Belfort narrowly missed making the field in his namesake region. The bantamweight challenger Barao got a surprise invite from a mid-major conference (coming out of the WEC and after three UFC wins) instead of stalwarts like Alistair Overeem and Grey Maynard, but now he has to go up against Jones. Jones is the brightest young star in the UFC, and the champ takes this one easily.

2. Benson Henderson vs. 3. Junior dos Santos:

Henderson fought smart and fought well against Frankie Edgar, and he's a wrecking ball at 155. But dos Santos' sharp boxing and amazing run can't be overlooked; the Brazilian moves on.

Bad Blood Region

1. Georges St-Pierre vs. 4. Nick Diaz:

If Diaz does in fact want to fight again, there's no way he would turn down a shot at St-Pierre. As long as Georges fights smart, he should win, however, as he is a better pound-for-pound fighter.

2. Dan Henderson vs. 3. Rashad Evans:

There is no rivalry between the two, but both guys could clash simply because of their competitiveness. Henderson is on a roll, but Evans is the better fighter right now.

Round Two (Elite 8)

1. Anderson Silva vs. 2. Dominick Cruz:

Both guys are masters at slipping punches, but Anderson's finishing ability gives him the Round 2 win here.

4. Shogun Rua vs. 2. Frankie Edgar:

Rua is a the wily veteran who pulled the upset while Edgar is still in his prime. That gives Frankie the slight edge and a win here.

1. Jon Jones vs. 3. Junior dos Santos:

Junior's got KO power, but Jones can finish you in every other conceivable way, giving him the pound-for-pound win here.

1. Georges St-Pierre vs. 3. Rashad Evans:

Both guys are masterful MMA wrestlers despite not as much college of Olympic success as many others. GSP's striking and quickness give him the win, though.

Round Three (Final Four)

1. Anderson Silva vs. 2. Frankie Edgar:

Edgar has the edge in terms of age and wrestling ability, but Silva gets the nod here because he's got the finishing ability and the flash that Edgar doesn't quite have. But it was a great Final Four run for the underdog Frankie.

1. Jon Jones vs. 1. Georges St-Pierre:

Champion vs. champion here, with a unique clash in grappling styles taking center stage. St-Pierre's recent injuries hurt, but GSP has just enough experience and skill to take home a win here setting up a dream matchup.

March Madness Pound-for-Pound UFC Title

1. Anderson Silva vs. 1. Georges St-Pierre:

Two fighters who've been similarly dominant and revered (for the most part) square off in the title. St-Pierre has the wrestling edge and that has been Silva's weakness, although he did submit Chael Sonnen after being battered for four-plus rounds. Silva will go for the KO in this one, but eventually St-Pierre will grind out the win to become the 2012 March Madness Pound-for-Pound champ.
