Mark Hunt says he broke toe in first round of UFC 160 co-headliner

If Mark Hunt looked a little more flatfooted than usual this past weekend, the UFC heavyweight apparently had a good reason.

Following a third-round knockout loss to Junior dos Santos in UFC 160's co-headliner and “Fight of the Night” winner, Hunt confirmed a broken digit.

As he wrote on Facebook: “thanks for the support apologies about the result junior was to slick for me,got a broken toe first round,and had no movement,but like i said before if i am going out i am out on my back thanks again 1luv.”

In the May 25 pay-per-view co-main event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Hunt fought on despite the bloody and broken toe. While he stood and absorbed some of dos Santos’ heaviest blows, he couldn’t withstand a flashy spinning heel kick in the third round that set up the TKO stoppage.

Following the event, UFC President Dana White confirmed Hunt had been taken to a hospital for medical care but didn’t say why.

Hunt gave no timetable for his return.

Before the loss to dos Santos (16-2 MMA, 10-1 UFC), the 39-year-old Hunt (9-8 MMA, 4-2 UFC) was possibly a win away from a UFC title shot. The New Zealand native and former kickboxer had won four consecutive UFC fights, including one over Stefan Struve, before the setback to ex-champ dos Santos, who now gets the next shot at Cain Velasquez‘s UFC belt.
