Following a stunning knockout of Mark Munoz his his 185-pound debut, Lyoto Machida could be a mere one-fight away from a title shot, according to UFC president Dana White.
He steps into the Octagon opposite former Dream and Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 36 in Brazil. If he wins, he’s likely to get the next shot at the UFC belt being contested by Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort in May.
“Yes, if Machida wins, he could possibly be next in line for a title shot,” White told FOX Sports Live when asked of the fighter’s future.
The road to the title isn’t quite as clear for Mousasi, but if he defeats the former UFC light heavyweight champion, it’s likely that his name will be among the those battling for the next UFC middleweight title shot.
