Garcia and Matt Grice
will square off June 8 at
UFC on FX 3, promotion officials announced Thursday.
While a venue for the event has yet to be confirmed, the show is
expected to be headlined by a pivotal flyweight rematch between
Johnson and Ian McCall.
The winner of that contest will go on to fight Joseph
Benavidez to determine the UFC’s inaugural 125-pound
UFC on FX 3 will also showcase a pair of top bantamweights, as
former WEC champion Eddie
Wineland locks horns with onetime title challenger Scott
Known as one of the more aggressive fighters in the sport, Garcia
has lost three of his last four fights. Following a hard-fought
split decision defeat to Mark
Hominick in his final WEC appearance, “Bad Boy” earned a
controversial win over Nam Phan in his
December 2010 UFC debut.
Garcia fell by submission to Chan Sung
Jung last March, succumbing to the first twister in UFC
history. His most recent in-cage appearance came Oct. 8 at UFC 136,
where Garcia dropped a unanimous nod to Phan in their rematch.
Grice, 30, is now in his second run with the UFC. After ending a
four-fight Octagon stint in 2009 that saw him post a 1-3 record,
Grice rattled off four consecutive wins before receiving the call
to rejoin the promotion. The Oklahoman stumbled in his UFC return,
however, catching a devastating combination from Ricardo
Lamas that spelled defeat for Grice at June’s UFC Live 4.
