Lawrence DiGiulio Taking Aim at Inaugural WSOF Global Flyweight Championship

When looking back over his split-decision loss to Yusaku Nakamura at WSOF Global Championship 2 in February, flyweight veteran Lawrence DiGiulio does not see how the judges could have scored the fight against him.

After an admittedly slow start, DiGiulio believes he dominated the last two rounds of the fight and should have come out with a clear-cut victory.

“I’ve watched the fight a bunch of times and really don’t see how I lost that fight,” DiGiulio told MMAWeekly.com. “It was a decent fight, don’t get me wrong. It was a good fight, and Nakamura is a good guy, but I’m not sure what (the judges) were watching.

“He won the first round. The second round, I thought was clearly me. And in the third round, I absolutely destroyed him. There was no part of my mind where I thought I lost.”

Prior to the loss in February, DiGiulio had been on a nine-fight winning streak. DiGiulio credits his blue collar work ethic as the key to his run.

“It’s just been me having consistent, hard, training,” he said. “You’ve got to listen to your body, too. I’ll take a day off here or there when I really need it, but it’s about pushing yourself to the point to where you know you’re going to perform optimally.”

DiGiulio (17-6-1) will look to get back on track when he takes on Marcel Adur (11-4) in the first round of WSOF Global’s flyweight tournament on Saturday in Quezon City, Philippines.

“I feel like if you start studying your opponent too much, you start playing into their game,” said DiGiulio “I want it to be my fight. I have my style of fighting, it’s what I’m best at, and that’s what I try to do. If (Adur is) better than me, he’s just a better fighter.

“He’s tough all the way around, but I’m definitely a different kind of fighter than most people are used to. I feel my style confuses people. I get better as the rounds go and will definitely be able to figure him out.”

With an opportunity claim the WSOF Global 125-pound title following a win on July 30, DiGiulio’s path through the remainder of 2016 is pretty much set.

“My goal right now is to win this title,” he said. “I’ll take whoever they throw at me, but as opportunities come, I’ll take them. I want to just keep winning, and nothing but good will come from that. So as long as I keep winning, I’ll be reaching my goals.”
