Korean promotion ROAD FC floats $200,000 offer for Benson Henderson

Let the bidding begin. Just a few days after completing the final fight on his UFC deal, Benson Henderson (23-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC) is already being publicly courted by Korean-based promotion ROAD FC.

“Benson Henderson put on an amazing performance in Seoul,” ROAD FC General Manager Mark Lee told MMAjunkie via email. “ROAD FC is aware he would like to test his upcoming free agency. We are interested in discussing a contract with Mr. Henderson for $200,000.”

When pressed, Lee declined to offer any other specifics on the terms of the offer he intends to make for the former UFC lightweight champion’s services. Henderson’s management team wasn’t immediately available for comment.

Once expired, UFC contracts typically contain both an exclusive negotiating period in the days immediately following the conclusion of the deal, as well as an additional span of time in which they have the legal right to match any offers made by a competing promotion.

Henderson, who’s mother hails from South Korea, fought in the nation’s capital this past weekend against Jorge Masvidal in the headlining bout of UFC Fight Night 79, which took place at Seoul’s Olympic Gymnastics Arena. It was Henderson’s second consecutive fight in the welterweight division after downing Brandon Thatch earlier this year.

Road FC held its debut event in October 2010 and has since promoted 30 events in South Korea as well as one in Japan. The promotion is scheduled to hold another event on Dec. 26 in Shanghai.
