Knee surgery expected to sideline UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov until 2015

This is what happens when you grapple with bears.

What is it about lightweights and their knees?

Top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 155-pound contender Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was signed to fight Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone for all of 20 minutes, will be out of action until at least January 2015, thanks to a torn meniscus (right knee) that will require surgery.

MMA Fighting brought word of the update earlier today.

Nurmagomedov (22-0) has been steamrolling the competition since day one. In addition to making a mockery of the international circuit, "The Eagle" has plowed through six straight under the ZUFFA banner, including Rafael dos Anjos earlier this year in Orlando.

The Dagestani is currently ranked No. 4 in the world.

The three contenders listed above him, Josh Thomson, Gilbert Melendez, and Ben Henderson -- as well as reigning division kingpin Anthony Pettis -- all have fights scheduled before the end of the year, so the landscape could be completely changed by January.

Time will tell.
