A foot injury suffered in training has forced former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson out of his upcoming fight on Sept 10 against Maximo Blanco.

Sources close to the fighter confirmed he was forced out of the bout. MMAFighting.com first reported the change.

According to his Twitter account as of Aug 17, Thomson had been sparring at American Kickboxing Academy in preparation for the bout when the injury occurred.

“Crazy (Bob Cook) caught me with a vicious elbow check to my foot,” Thomson wrote. “Getting x-ray now.”

Obviously by Tuesday’s news the prognosis was not what Thomson was hoping for and his return to action will be delayed for now.

Thomson was set to get back into the cage in Sept for the first time since a loss to Tatsuya Kawajiri in Japan on New Year’s Eve 2011. Thomson took the fight on short notice, and ended up losing a unanimous decision.

Thomson’s opponent Maximo Blanco is making his Strikeforce debut, but there’s been no word on a replacement yet to step in and face him on the Cincinnati, OH card.
