UFC officials announced the booking during Tuesday night’s episode of “UFC Tonight” on Fuel TV. UFC 156 will serve as the promotion’s traditional Super Bowl card and takes place in Las Vegas, though an official venue has yet to be announced.
Aldo and Edgar were initially expected to square off in the UFC 153 headliner on Oct. 13, but lingering injuries from Aldo’s September motorcycle accident forced him to withdraw from the show, prompting the UFC to book a replacement main event between Anderson Silva and Stephan Bonnar.
Aldo, 26, currently rides a 14-fight winning streak and has earned 11 straight victories since entering the Zuffa fold in 2008. “Scarface” fought twice last year, making his Octagon debut by outpointing Mark Hominick at UFC 129 before doing the same to ex-lightweight title challenger Kenny Florian at UFC 136. Aldo last competed on Jan. 14 at UFC 142, knocking out Team Alpha Male standout Chad Mendes at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.
Edgar recently suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in his career. “The Answer” first dropped his lightweight title to Benson Henderson in February at UFC 144 and was then bested in a hard-fought rematch on Aug. 11 at UFC 150. Edgar captured the 155-pound title in 2010 by outpointing B.J. Penn and went on to defend the strap successfully against Penn and Gray Maynard before relinquishing the belt to Henderson.
