Jorge Masvidal under consideration to fight Gilbert Melendez for Strikeforce lightweight title
ProElite.com (SamCaplan.ProElite.com) has confirmed through Strikeforce Vice President Mike Afromowitz that BodogFIGHT lightweight competitor Jorge Masvidal is under consideration to receive a shot at the promotion’s lightweight title currently held by Gilbert Melendez on March 29 in San Jose at the HP Pavilion.
The news was first reported in this week’s print edition of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer. According to Meltzer’s report, Koutetsu Boku is the other candidate that’s receiving strong consideration.
The March 29 show, which will be co-promoted by Strikeforce and EliteXC and scheduled to air on Showtime, will be headlined by Frank Shamrock defending his Strikeforce middleweight title against Cung Le.
Masvidal, who currently trains with American Top Team in Florida, is an aggressive fighter who currently has two fights remaining on his contract with BodogFIGHT. However, Bodog is one of Strikeforce’s top sponsors and has loaned its fighters to the promotion in the past. In fact, Masvidal competed under the Bodog banner on Strikeforce’s September show at the Playboy Mansion, where he recorded a first round TKO over veteran Matt Lee.

The UFC contender and former, longtime Strikeforce champion has been out of action since defeating Diego Sanchez in an instant classic at UFC 166 in October, but the motivation for the Skrap Pack representative's hiatus have been just.

If it was up to Anthony Pettis, he'd handle his critics the way he used on the streets of Milwaukee as a kid.
"Where I grew up if someone talks any type of mess you handle it a certain way, and that's what I'm used to," Pettis said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour.
But the oft-criticized UFC lightweight champion knows things aren't that simple anymore.
"As the champ things are a little different now," acknowledged Pettis, who is currently shooting the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter out more
Anthony Pettis will defend his UFC lightweight title December 6 against top contender Gilbert Melendez at UFC 181.
The fight will be Pettis' first title defense. For that matter, it's the first bout of any kind for "Showtime" since he won the belt from Benson Henderson last August at UFC 164.
Pettis himself broke the news Monday while a guest on The MMA Hour broadcast with host Ariel Helwani. "December 6 is going to be the date of my next fight; it'll be out here in Vegas," Pettis said. "I got w more

The UFC lightweight champion announced on yesterday's edition of The MMA Hour that he will be facing Gilbert Melendez on December 6 in Las Vegas. That event, which appears as though it will be UFC 181, still doesn't have a venue set as of now.

Masvidal spoke to SBN alumni E. Spencer Kyte about the fight,"I've got to stay active. I'm not one of those guys that can fig more
It looks like Dan Henderson will be heading back into middleweight waters.
The MMA legend and former Olympian has found success in a variety of weight classes throughout his storied career, with several of his greatest achievements coming at 185 pounds. Yet, "Hendo" has spent the better part of the past four years competing in the light heavyweight fold, where he climbed the divisional ladder to establish himself as one of the top 205-pound fighters on the UFC roster. Nevertheless, it has been a more
Ear Muffs! "Big Brown" isn't too happy with EA Sports for leaving him off the new UFC video game.
If while scrolling through the heavyweight roster on the new EA Sports UFC video game, you perhaps caught yourself wondering why you can't choose Brendan Schuab as a playable character, you're not alone.
"Big Brown" himself was baffled as to why he was left off the roster, but seems to think that the contract negotiations he was going through with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) while the game more
Since they're all in the twilight of their careers, it seemed natural for the UFC to add Takanori Gomi, Norafumi "Kid" Yamamoto and Yoshihiro Akiyama to the UFC Fight Night 52 card in September in Japan, according to Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting.
Although none of the three men have flourished since joining the UFC, the company's brass must assume that if anything's going to motivate them, it'll be the UFC's first trip to Japan since UFC on Fuel TV 8.
Of the three, only Gomi fought on the UFC on more
