Anderson Silva has perhaps the biggest test of his career coming up next month when he tries to recapture the middleweight title he held for nearly seven years.
To do that, Silva will have to go through Chris Weidman, who upset him at UFC 148 in July, ending a reign of dominance that started in 2006. But no MMA fan can forget that “The Spider” nearly relinquished his title three years prior.
Chael Sonnen took it to Silva with trash talk for weeks leading up to their fight at UFC 117, then took it to him immediately after the fight started, landing some big shots on the feet before taking the Brazilian to the ground fewer than two minutes into the first round. It lasted for more than four rounds, with Sonnen laying down hundreds of strikes on Silva over more than 20 minutes.
But with his title on the line, Silva responded in the fifth round, doing the only thing he could do from his back to win the fight.
The UFC, celebrating its 20th anniversary this week with UFC 167 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, is calling Silva’s win over Sonnen the best submission of its lifespan. Where does it land for you? Check out the full fight video above, and sound off in the comments section.
