LAS VEGAS – MMA’s leading all-women’s promotion is in Sin City for this weekend’s “Invicta FC 16: Hamasaki vs. Brown” event, and weigh-ins took place today. The evening’s headliners made weight, but a few others stole the show.
Today’s ceremony took place at Tropicana Lounge at Tropicana Las Vegas. Friday’s fights, which stream live on UFC Fight Pass, take place at the same property’s Trinidad Pavilion.
In the night’s main event, Invicta atomweight champ Ayaka Hamasaki (12-1) defends her belt against Amber Brown (6-1). The co-feature sees Jennifer Maia (12-4-1) take on Vanessa Porto (18-6) for the promotion’s vacant interim flyweight title.
UFC veteran Angela Hill made weight for her matchup with Stephanie Eggink but also earned applause for a spot-on rendition of the character Dhalsim from the long-running “Street Fighter” video game series. Fellow UFC vet Roxanne Modafferi also made waves, bringing her whole team from Syndicate MMA to the stage dressed as various characters from the video game series “Mortal Kombat.”
The night was not without some confusion, as Irene Aldana and Herica Tiburcio each came in heavy for their contests but immediately started to rehydrate before an announcement was made as to any potential fines. Nevada State Athletic Commission officials were not immediately available to clarify how the contests would proceed, but MMAjunkie will provide an update as soon as possible.
