A highly anticipated title-eliminator for the UFC women’s bantamweight division appears it’s been scrapped.
This past month the division’s reigning champion, Ronda Rousey, announced Miesha Tate (16-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC) and Jessica Eye (11-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC), would tangle for No. 1 contender’s status.
However, in answering a tweet from Eye about why a contract hadn’t been signed, Tate said an injury had ruled her out of the bout (via Twitter):
The fight was targeted for June, possibly at UFC Fight Night 68 in New Orleans on June 6, though the UFC never made a formal announcement.
The nature of Tate’s injury wasn’t disclosed, and MMAjunkie couldn’t immediately reach her for details.
Tate has won three straight fights since losing a rematch to Rousey at UFC 168. She’s defeated former title challengers Liz Carmouche and Sara McMann, as well as Rin Nakai, during the stretch that got her back into title contention.
Eye, meanwhile, earned her first official UFC win this past November with a second-round TKO of Leslie Smith. A previous victory over ex-Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman was overturned when Eye tested positive for marijuana.
