If Brendan Schaub isn’t retired, UFC 192 winner Derrick Lewis would like to fight him

After a third-round TKO of Viktor Pesta (10-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at this past Saturday’s UFC 192, UFC heavyweight Derrick Lewis said he’d like to avenge his two losses in the promotion’s octagon – but not just yet.

Lewis (13-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) has an idea for his next bout, though he might need to convince his opponent it’s a good idea.

“I haven’t seen Brendan Schaub for a while; I don’t think he’s had a fight lined up,” Lewis told MMAjunkie. “Maybe it would be good to get a fight lined up with him.”

It’s debatable whether Schaub might agree. The veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter 10,” who like Lewis suffers from performance anxiety prior to fights, said he is unlikely to return to the octagon unless it’s for the fans.

For Lewis, the matchup is just a matter of business.

“I believe (Schaub) is higher ranked than I am, and that would be a good fight for me,” said Lewis.

After all, “The Black Beast” does need to build momentum after two quick wins gave way to a 1-2 streak in which he dropped fights to Shawn Jordan and Matt Mitrione.

Prior to his win this past Saturday night, Jordan stopped him at UFC Fight Night 68 in a rematch of a 2010 bout in which he lost by decision. This past September, he was knocked out by Matt Mitrione.

So Lewis has those on his list, as well.

“I fought (Jordan) my second pro fight ever, and I lost a decision to him,” he said. “And by losing to him again, I feel like it wouldn’t make sense right now. But it would be good to get a rematch later on down the line. I would like a rematch with Matt Mitrione, as well, too, but later on down the road.”

Now, it’s time to move forward and get back to knocking out his opponents. As he showed against Presta, the game plan of outwrestling him to a decision isn’t any less dangerous.

“His last two fights, he won by decision, and I knew damn well I wasn’t going to let it go to decision, no matter what,” Lewis said of Pesta, speaking of a late second-round flurry that did damage before the finish in the third.

If Lewis can also get his fight over with quick, so the butterflies don’t get too bad, that would also be ideal.

“I don’t care who it is; I could be fighting Cain Velasquez and do that the first fight of the night,” he said.
