Both the matchup and UFC 145 were initially intended to take place March 24 in Montreal. However, due to scheduling complications, that event was canceled, and the event planned to be UFC 146 in Atlanta was renamed as the new UFC 145.
A former World Extreme Cagefighting standout, Hominick, 29, has lost back-to-back fights. Following a successful UFC debut one year ago against George Roop, “The Machine” was outpointed in April by Jose Aldo in a failed title bid at UFC 129. Hominick’s most recent outing ended disastrously, as he was knocked out by Chan Sung Jung in just seven seconds on Dec. 10.
Three years the elder of his foe, Yagin, 32, has won two of his last three fights since returning to the cage after 18 months on the shelf. “The Filipino Phenom” kicked off 2011 with a technical knockout over Joe Neri in June before capturing the TPF 145-pound strap by submitting former Bellator champion Joe Soto on August 5. Yagin’s momentum would be halted in his UFC debut, however, as the Hawaii native was outpointed by Junior Assuncao at UFC 135.
