UFC light heavyweight contender Glover Teixeira will not require surgery on his injured right shoulder. UFC Tonight reported the development on Wednesday.
Teixeira (22-3) injured his shoulder during the opening round of his UFC 172 title fight with champion Jon Jones in Baltimore on April 26. The two were battling for position along the cage inside the clinch when Jones used a shoulder crank that resulted in a torn labrum in Teixeira’s shoulder.
An MRI on May 2 confirmed the tear, and the 34-year-old was expected to require surgery. After meeting with UFC doctors on Wednesday, however, Teixeira learned that he would not have to go under the knife after all.
Teixeira lost to Jones by unanimous decision. It was his first defeat since 2006. It’s not known how long he’ll be out with the injury, but he was happy that he would not require surgery.
