Gilbert Melendez to Challenge Benson Henderson for Lightweight Title at UFC on Fox 7
A lightweight title tilt between former Strikeforce champion
and reigning UFC king Benson
will headline UFC on Fox
Promotion officials announced the news Tuesday, revealing that the
event will take place at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The show’s
main card airs live on Fox’s flagship network, while the prelims
will be broadcast on cable network FX. MMAFighting.com first reported the
upcoming main event on Monday.
Melendez, 30, is regarded by many as one of the sport’s top
pound-for-pound talents, despite never competing in the UFC. A
two-time Strikeforce champion, “El Nino” recaptured the belt from
Thomson in December 2009 and has since defended it four times,
besting Shinya Aoki,
Kawajiri and Jorge
Masvidal before most recently taking a hard-fought split
decision over Thomson in their May 19 rubber match. The Cesar
Gracie pupil was expected return to the cage to defend his belt
Healy, but injuries to Melendez derailed that pairing in both
September and January.
Henderson, 29, has been perfect since joining the UFC in 2011,
rattling off three straight wins before taking the lightweight
title from Frankie
Edgar in a competitive unanimous decision this past February at
UFC 144. “Smooth” then narrowly edged Edgar in their August
rematch, taking a contentious split decision win over “The Answer”
at UFC 150. Most recently, Henderson put forth a masterful
performance against Melendez’s teammate Nate Diaz at
UFC on Fox 5, using a varied attack to outpoint Diaz on Dec. 8 in

Anthony Pettis will defend his UFC lightweight title December 6 against top contender Gilbert Melendez at UFC 181.
The fight will be Pettis' first title defense. For that matter, it's the first bout of any kind for "Showtime" since he won the belt from Benson Henderson last August at UFC 164.
Pettis himself broke the news Monday while a guest on The MMA Hour broadcast with host Ariel Helwani. "December 6 is going to be the date of my next fight; it'll be out here in Vegas," Pettis said. "I got w more

However, the December 6 date is also the event that more
When a fighter loses a title fight, he usually has to go back to the drawing board, see what went wrong and figure out how to come back stronger.
Some are able to do that very well and get back in title contention quickly. Others, like Frank Mir, don't do so well after a title loss.
With more divisions and fighters now than ever before, there are far more title fights and far more title contenders. Some contenders are ready for a second or maybe even a third shot at the belt. Let's see who they more
For Gilbert Melendez, the ultimate prize may be off in the distance, but he has never taken his mind off the UFC lightweight title. He will have his shot against Anthony Pettis at the UFC's 2014 year-end event in December.
The UFC contender and former, longtime Strikeforce champion has been out of action since defeating Diego Sanchez in an instant classic at UFC 166 in October, but the motivation for the Skrap Pack representative's hiatus have been just.

If it was up to Anthony Pettis, he'd handle his critics the way he used on the streets of Milwaukee as a kid.
"Where I grew up if someone talks any type of mess you handle it a certain way, and that's what I'm used to," Pettis said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour.
But the oft-criticized UFC lightweight champion knows things aren't that simple anymore.
"As the champ things are a little different now," acknowledged Pettis, who is currently shooting the latest season of The Ultimate Fighter out more
"Showtime" also talks about his time thus far on the set of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 20 alongside "El Nino" as well as the level of talent the 115-pound female fighters have shown. So much for that interim title talk.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Anthony Pettis has a date for his first-ever title defense set, as "Showtime" confirmed on The MMA Hour that he will be going toe-to-toe against Gilbert Melendez on Dec., 6, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
But, that's as far as more

Terrence Crawford stopped Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round to retain his lightweight title last Saturday night (June 28, 2014) inside the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Gamboa -- a 2004 Olympic medalist for Cuba -- was able to hurt the champ early and seemed to be in control for the first couple of rounds. Unfortunately, "El Ciclon de Guantánamo" was unable to hang on and wound up getting dropped four times by "Bud," including the brutal uppercut seen in the HBO Boxing video highlight more
