MMA is slowly working its way into the mainstream of American society. Friday’s ESPN announcement for its annual ESPY Awards included two UFC fighters and one Strikeforce fighter, further bolstering that claim.
UFC titleholders Georges St-Pierre, who has been nominated before, and Jon Jones, as well as Strikeforce heavyweight Fabricio Werdum, are up for the 2011 ESPY Awards.
St-Pierre and Jones are both nominated for “Best Fighter.” Besides each other, they are up against boxers Manny Pacquiao, Bernard Hopkins, and Sergio Martinez.
Werdum has been nominated for “Best Upset” for submitting Fedor Emelianenko, who was then widely considered the top heavyweight in the sport.
This is the third time St-Pierre has been nominated, all three times in the “Best Fighter” category. Jones and Werdum are both first-time nominees.
Fans can vote on the both categories, as well as 31 others, up until July 9, on ESPN’s official ESPY Awards website. The awards show, hosted by comedian Seth Meyers, will air on July 13 on ESPN.
