Frank Trevino signs with UFC, hopes to debut at first event in Mexico

fighterFTUndefeated MMA vet Frank Trevino has gotten his wish to compete inside the octagon.

Trevino’s manager, Wade Hampel of Big Fight Management, today announced the fighter has inked a four-fight contract with the UFC and hopes to make his debut in the promotion’s first trip to Mexico, where he was born and raised.

Trevino (11-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who now resides in South Texas, will drop from the welterweight division to lightweight, though a date and opponent have yet to be confirmed, Hampel told MMAjunkie.

“Frank really wants to represent the Mexican people, and wants to become the new face of Mexican MMA,” said Hampel.

At 170 pounds, Trevino earned four wins apiece via submission and TKO or KO. He most recently took home a unanimous decision over Lester Batres at Legacy FC 25. Trevino weighed in for the fight at 166 pounds.

The UFC has yet to make official any matchups for its Mexican debut, which is expected to take place in April in Mexico City. The promotion signed a TV deal with Televisa in July and is expected to pack the card with Hispanic talent.

Earlier this month, a rumored headliner between heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum was shot down by UFC President Dana White. Today, Velasquez’s trainer, Bob Cook, told MMAjunkie.com that the champ could compete if he gets a positive prognosis on a still-healing shoulder injury suffered in his most recent title defense at UFC 166.

Trevino joins Erik Perez, Will Campuzano and Tony Ferguson as one of four native Mexicans in the UFC.
