Francis Carmont meets Constantinos Philippou at UFC 165 in Toronto

Carmont (21-7 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will meet Constantinos Philippou (12-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) at UFC 165 this fall. UFC officials on Tuesday announced the new matchup.

UFC 165 takes place Sept. 21 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The main card will air on pay-per-view following prelims that are expected to air on either FOX Sports 1 or FOX Sports 2 and Facebook.

Carmont has won 10 straight, including his first five since signing with the UFC. The Frenchman, who trains at Tristar Gym in Montreal alongside UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, has won back-to-back fights by decision after a pair of submissions. In April, he beat Lorenz Larkin by unanimous decision in a controversial call – most media scored the fight for Larkin. At UFC 154 this past November, he won a split call against Tom Lawler to go 3-0 in 2012 after rear-naked choke s submissions of Karlos Vemola and Magnus Cedenblad.

Philippou has won five straight in the UFC, as well. After dropping this short-notice debut at UFC 128 to Nick Catone, he has three decision wins and a pair of knockouts. At UFC 155 in December, he replaced injured teammate Chris Weidman and knocked out Tim Boetsch in the third round to follow 2012 wins over Riki Fukuda and Court McGee. He was expected to face Ronald Souza at UFC on FX 8 in May, but an injury sidelined him the week before fight. He’ll get back to action after what will be a nine-month layoff.

Philippou is ranked No. 9 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com MMA middleweight rankings. Carmont is one of three current honorable mentions in the rankings.

UFC 165 includes a pair of title fights as light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defends his belt against Alexander Gustafsson and interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao puts his title on the line against former WEC champ Eddie Wineland. It’s the second straight time the UFC has held two title fights on a card in Toronto and third time overall.

With the addition to the card, UFC 165 now includes:
