Floyd Mayweather Retires Conor McGregor Hype Train | MMAWeekly.com

It was fun while it lasted, but Floyd Mayweather put the Conor McGregor hype train out of service on Saturday.

Mayweather, in an interview with FightHype.com, said that it is time for him to move on from trying to put a fight together with McGregor.

“I tried to make the fight happen between me and Conor McGregor,” Mayweather said. “We wasn’t able to make the fight happen, so we must move on.”

The hype surrounding a potential Mayweather vs. McGregor bout began, coincidentally, around the same time of McGregor’s blow-up with the UFC over media commitments, leading many to question if it was legitimate or as much opportunist self-promotion for two of combat sports’ self-promotion elites.

It appears that it was likely the latter, as Mayweather, despite shooting down the McGregor match-up, chose his words carefully to keep himself in the limelight.

“I feel honored to be the biggest name in MMA and in boxing and I don’t even compete no more.”
