Former UFC champion Anthony Pettis has broken his silence and addressed the apparent fire attack on three vehicles parked in the driveway of his Milwaukee home.
An unknown suspect torched the cars early Thursday morning in what police are investigating as a case of arson. An initial report stated “Showtime” wouldn’t comment on the incident.
He did, however, post a statement (via Instagram) this morning to question why he would be targeted by such a “cowardly act,” and he implored his community to assist in capturing those responsible:
“I am a fighter. I won’t be defeated by this,” Pettis wrote in the statement. “I am also extremely confused and saddened by the events that occurred. I am grateful that no one was harmed by this cowardly act. My life as well as my loved ones were put in danger. I cannot understand why someone would want to hurt myself or my family.
“I will do everything I can to ensure that we find out who committed this crime and that they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I’m constantly defending my choice to stay in this city. Regardless of the crimes that have been occurring lately, this is my home. I really hope the city that I rep has my back on this one and helps by reporting anything they know about this.”
The incident occurred just hours after Pettis’ (19-5 MMA, 6-4 UFC) next fight was announced. He’s slated to fight Max Holloway (16-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) in the featherweight co-main event of UFC 206, which takes place Dec. 10 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto with the main card on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
The bout marks Pettis’ second fight at featherweight after the former UFC lightweight titleholder made a successful debut in the weight class with a third-round submission win over Charles Oliveira at UFC on FOX 21 in August.
Milwaukee police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact them at (414) 935-7360.
