Episode No. 6 recap: ‘The Ultimate Fighter Nations: Canada vs. Australia’

Episode No. 6 of “The Ultimate Fighter Nations: Canada vs. Australia” opens with Richard Walsh and Matthew Deroches at the “TUF” house discussing their fight from the last episode.

Despite the fact Walsh outpointed Deroches for a decision victory, both men are very cordial and respectful toward one another.

Team Australia is encouraged by the newfound confidence of the team now that they’ve won two fights in a row. Moreover, the fighters who have already advanced to the semifinals are thinking about what matchup will best serve them in moving into the finale.

Team Canada’s Sheldon Westcott, who fights Team Australia’s Daniel Kelly later in the episode, says he has an injured knee and is working diligently to rest and recover as much as possible before his fight goes down.

At the next Team Australia training session, Kelly prepares for his upcoming bout. Kelly is one of the most experienced athletes on the show, as he represented his country in Judo during the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympic games.

Back at the “TUF” house, the fighters are presented with a night of relaxation in the form of a live broadcast of UFC 167, featuring Canadian MMA trailer blazer Georges St-Pierre taking on Johny Hendricks in the main event of the evening.

With training behind them, both fighters hit the 185-pound middleweight mark at the weigh-in, making the third quarterfinal matchup of the season official. A friendly stare down follows the weigh-in.

TEAM CANADA’S SHELDON WESTCOTT (8-1) VS. TEAM AUSTRALIA’S DANIEL KELLY (5-0)

Round 1 – Westcott tags Kelly with a big uppercut right off the bat and has the Aussie on his heels. Westcott pushes forward with a flurry of strikes, grabs ahold of a waist lock and slams Kelly to the mat. Kelly returns to vertical position, but not for long as the Canadian slams him again. Westcott briefly takes the back, but Kelly spins out. Westcott drags the fight to the ground again and uses a slick transition from the back into an arm-triangle choke. The choke is deep from the second Westcott locks it in and Kelly rightfully taps out.

Westcott celebrates his incredibly one-sided victory, which snaps a two-fighting winning streak by Team Australia and moves Canada ahead 4-2 overall in the competition with two quarterfinal matchups to go.

Despite having fight selection back on their side, Team Canada does not get the option of picking the matchup. With only two welterweight competitors remaining, Team Canada’s Olivier Aubin-Mercier (4-0) will meet Team Australia’s Jake Matthews (6-0) in the final 170-pound quarterfinal of the season.
