Did Conor McGregor go too far hyping up his UFC 189 fight with Jose Aldo?

One of the most highly anticipated UFC bouts in years has come crumbling down with Jose Aldo’s injured rib forcing him out of the UFC 189 main event against Conor McGregor.

While the bout won’t be taking place on July 11, McGregor (17-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) hasn’t turned down the verbal heat directed at Aldo (25-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC). One constant focus in the build-up to Aldo-McGregor has been if McGregor has gone too far with his verbal assaults toward the champion.

While McGregor will now face Chad Mendes (17-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) for an interim belt, his behavior in building up the original fight is still a hotly debated topic.

MMAjunkie caught up with several UFC fighters – including former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson (16-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) – to ask their thoughts on McGregor’s behavior.

“Well, you know, he’s doing his thing,” Gustafsson said. “He’s very good at it. He knows how to sell a fight. But me, personally, I would never take the chance. I would show him some respect. Aldo is still the best guy out there. It’s a sport. We’re not doing wrestling, we do a martial art. We have to represent the sport good. Some stuff he does, I wouldn’t support it at all. He’s a talented guy and he backs things up.”
