A pair of UFC lightweight newcomers will meet when the promotion makes its debut in New Zealand.
Dashon Johnson (9-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Jake Matthews (4-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) have been booked for a bout at UFC Fight Night 43. Promotion officials announced the new contest on Tuesday night.
Featuring a middleweight headliner of Nate Marquardt vs. James Te Huna, “UFC Fight Night 43: Te Huna vs. Marquardt” takes place June 28 at Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand.
The entire event streams in the U.S. on UFC Fight Pass, though a bout order has not yet been revealed.
Johnson was set to make his RFA debut next month at RFA 15 in Los Angeles. Instead, the Californian will head to the UFC hoping to keep his perfect record intact. The 26-year-old has eight of his nine wins by stoppage, including five knockouts. In 2014, he has a pair of first-round choke submissions in a total of just 1:36.
Matthews is coming off a stint on “TUF: Nations,” on which he fought for Team Australia at welterweight. He dropped a unanimous decision to Oliver Aubin-Mercier in his first fight in the house on the show. He’ll return to lightweight for his official UFC debut. Outside the “TUF” house, he’s perfect with three of his four wins by stoppage.
With the addition to the card, UFC Fight Night 43 now includes:
