Daniel Cormier Withdraws from UFC 197 Fight vs. Jon Jones Due to Injury

Daniel Cormier Withdraws from UFC 197 Fight vs. Jon Jones Due to Injury

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has suffered an injury that will hold him out of his UFC 197 fight against Jon Jones on April 23, according to BJPenn.com

ESPN.com's Brett Okamoto confirmed the news.

The injury will cancel the rematch of their UFC 182 bout in January 2015, when Jones defeated Cormier for the light heavyweight title.

There has been no official word on the type of injury Cormier suffered or whether Jones will remain on the UFC 197 card. But sources told Talk MMA on March 26 that Cormier was at a wrestling match and "could barely walk on his left leg."

It's been a tough week for the duo that was set to headline the card, as Jones was arrested Tuesday for violating his probation, per TMZ.

While Jones was able to stay on the card, this has to be disappointing for the 28-year-old, who thought he had another shot to tarnish the record of the 37-year-old Cormier.

Heading into UFC 182, Cormier was 15-0 before falling by unanimous decision to Jones, who hasn't fought since that bout.

Cormier retained the belt, though, as Jones was suspended and stripped of the belt after a hit-and-run accident in New Mexico, while Cormier tapped out Anthony Johnson in May, per Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports.

While it might not have been on the same level as Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz's buildup, these two seemed ready to go at it with any chance they got:

Now with Cormier off the card and Jones' status in question, the Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo co-main event will take center stage April 23.
