Daniel Cormier Reveals UFC 200 Game Plan for Jon Jones Rematch

Light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former titleholder Jon Jones will rematch at UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas, and Cormier says that he’s not changing his game plan from their first fight.

Jones held the 205-pound title from 2011 until 2015. His last title defense was a unanimous decision over Cormier at UFC 182 in January 2015.

No one defeated Jones for him to lose his title; he did that to himself.

Jones was stripped of the belt after defending it a record setting eight times for his involvement in a hit-and-run incident April 2015, weeks before his scheduled ninth title defense.

“Bones” was slated to face Anthony Johnson in the UFC 187 main event in May 2015, but was stripped of his title and suspended by the UFC for his actions outside of the cage. Cormier stepped in on short notice to face Johnson and captured the vacant light heavyweight title.

Even though he lost in their first meeting, Cormier doesn’t plan to change his game plan at all for the rematch.

Daniel Cormier vs Jon Jones UFC 200 NY Faceoff“I’m not changing anything. I’m going right at his ass. I’m not changing nothing,” Cormier said during the UFC 200 press conference in New York.

“Last time, I didn’t take Jon down as many times as I wanted to. This time, you’re going to see a fight where I go right over there and take him down.”

The light heavyweight titleholder knows his game plan may not please the fans, but he’s determined to retain the belt.

“You guys may boo, but I’m going to hold his ass down for 25 minutes. I’m going to take him down and hold him down for 25 minutes,” said Cormier.

At the press conference, Cormier addressed Jones directly, proclaiming that he will not lose to him again in the rematch.

“It won’t happen again Jon Jones… You’re a bum.”
