Dana White: Nick Diaz Offered Fight with Hector Lombard, Waiting on Response

The always-exciting discussion of when (or if) former Strikeforce welterweight champion and former UFC title contender Nick Diaz is returning to the cage has entered its next chapter.

Speaking to the media Wednesday, UFC President Dana White discussed that Diaz has been offered another fight, this time against former Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard. Via Twitter:

The fight makes sense in several ways.

First and foremost, since Lombard is the on-paper top contender in the welterweight division (at least according to conventional "MMA Math") it is a fight that would instantly thrust Diaz back into the welterweight title picture. Diaz, of course, is exclusively focused on getting UFC gold, but simply isn't going to get a shot without taking another fight. This would provide a direct path to the belt.

Secondly, the fight has a built-in storyline. Jake Shields, a friend and training partner of Diaz, was recently cut from the UFC following a convincing loss to Lombard. That adds a pro wrestling-style (but actually real) revenge storyline to the fight.

Unfortunately, the chances of the fight happening are held back by the uncertainty regarding whether or not Diaz will actually return to fighting. While he has expressed interest in a comeback, he has angled exclusively for a title fight. Coming off back-to-back losses to Carlos Condit and Georges St-Pierre, it's hard to imagine the UFC bending to that demand.

The UFC has an enormous crop of top-level welterweights that deserve a title shot, meaning it would require a perfect storm of injuries and scheduling troubles to realistically see a Diaz vs. Hendricks title fight before Diaz earns it in the eyes of UFC management.

LAS VEGAS - UFC president Dana White held his annual Fan Expo question-and-answer session with the fans on Saturday at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. As usual, the event was a mix of the serious, the less serious, and the absurd, ranging from detailed questions about the company's business to painful-to-watch attempts at business pitches. One thing the UFC boss did indicate, however, is that he could very well by on the same wavelength as the fans who want the much-discussed potential Ander more

The Las Vegas fight boss has seemingly heard enough petulance from The 209. Even though he has not fought since Nov. 2013 (per his choice), Nate Diaz has always found a way to stay in the headlines. Mainly because of his ongoing feud with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which mostly centers around pay (or lack thereof). When he's not voicing his displeasure with his employer, Diaz is taking pot shots at his colleagues who are competing ... or who just so happen to have fights coming up. Hi more

Dana White recently said he didn't care if Nate Diaz wanted to sit out. Now we know why. Nate Diaz is standing firm in his stance to not return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Octagon until he gets a title shot or at least a new contract that pays him more than Arianny Celeste and Brittney Palmer. Unfortunately for the Stockton slugger, that's not going to happen anytime soon, according to UFC President Dana White, who says the ink isn't even dry yet on the contract Nate recently sig more

Anderson Silva will return to the Octagon in 2015, and he welcomes the idea of fighting Nick Diaz. In a recent media scrum in Rio de Janeiro, Silva confirmed he won’t compete this year since he’s "not feeling safe to return (in 2014)," and a fight with Diaz, a former welterweight title contender who is currently retired, would be interesting. "Well, if everybody is saying that it would be an interesting fight, what am I going to say?" Silva said. "It could be an interesting fight." Silva sparred more

Nick Diaz, on the other hand ... Stick a fork in him, he's done. At least when it comes to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion Chris Weidman, who is currently up two-zip on former division kingpin Anderson Silva, thanks to a pair of brutal finishes at UFC 162 and UFC 168, respectively. "The Spider" is moving on (told you so). Not to mention, Weidman has his hands full with Lyoto Machida, who tries to bring the belt back to Brazil this Saturday night (July 5, 2014) in the m more
