Dana White Confirms Henderson-Edgar Lightweight Title Rematch for UFC 150

Benson Henderson’s rumored Aug. 11 lightweight title defense is now official, as UFC President Dana White announced Tuesday that Henderson will rematch former champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 150.

White verified the matchup during the most recent episode of “UFC Tonight” on Fuel TV. While Henderson’s rematch with Edgar is expected to headline the event, the promotion has made no official announcement on that subject. UFC 150 takes place at the Pepsi Center in Denver and also features a middleweight confrontation between Jake Shields and Ed Herman.

Henderson, 28, took a unanimous decision from Edgar to capture the 155-pound title on Feb. 26 at UFC 144. The victory marked the fourth consecutive win for “Smooth,” who outpointed Mark Bocek, Jim Miller and Clay Guida en route to his title shot. A former World Extreme Cagefighting champion, Henderson suffered his lone defeat under the Zuffa banner in his last bout with the WEC, relinquishing his title to Anthony Pettis in Dec. 2010.

Edgar’s defeat to Henderson served as just the second setback of the New Jersey native’s pro career. The 30-year-old won the UFC title in April 2010, outpointing B.J. Penn in a contentious unanimous decision at UFC 112. Edgar went on to defeat Penn in a rematch and draw with Gray Maynard in the 2011 “Fight of the Year” at UFC 125. Eight months later, Edgar defeated Maynard by technical knockout, finishing “The Bully” in the fourth round of their UFC 136 headliner.
