UFC Middelweight Champion Chris Weidman (11-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) is out of his third defence at UFC 173, against ex-UFC title holder Lyoto Machida (21-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC), due to a knee injury. The bout is instead moved to headline UFC 175 in July.
UFC 175 takes place on July 5 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. A new main event for UFC 173 will be announced shortly.
UFC officials annonced: "Weidman suffered a knee injury that will require minor surgery and his bout with Machida has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 5. A new main event for UFC 173 on May 24 will be announced in the days to come".
Weidman was originally supposed to meet Vitor Belfort, but the Brazilian withdrew from the fight when the Nevada State Athletic Commission banned TRT use. “Given the time constraints involved between now and my proposed next bout in May, I have determined not to apply for a license to fight in Nevada at this time.” Said Belfort.
UFC 173 will be held on May 24 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
