Following UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre announcing that he was taking an extended leave of absence and vacating his belt, UFC president Dana White announced that Johny Hendricks would face Robbie Lawler for the vacated belt at on March 15 at UFC 171 in Dallas.
That is still the plan.
White, however, did misspeak on one element of that plan during Friday’s media conference call.
The UFC president said that Jon Jones would still top the UFC 171 fight card, putting his belt on the line against Glover Teixeira. A short time after the call, White corrected his mistake, Tweeting that Jones vs. Teixeira would not headline UFC 171. They would instead move into the UFC 172 main event slot.
A date and location for UFC 172 has not yet been announced, although UFC officials on Friday said that information would be made available shortly.
This marks the fourth event that Jones vs. Teixeira has been planned to headline, leaving UFC officials hoping it is the final move for it’s light heavyweight championship bout.
