Chael Sonnen Ignores Threats, Loses to Andre Galvao at Metamoris 4 Grappling Event

Chael SonnenEmbroiled in controversy following back-to-back failed drug tests that landed Chael Sonnen a lengthy suspension and cost him both his mixed martial arts and broadcasting jobs, the disgraced fighter still saw fit to compete at Saturday’s Metamoris 4 grappling event when the promoters came calling.

Under the threat of possible further repercussions from the Nevada Athletic Commission, the body that initially sanctioned Sonnen for his performance-enhancing-drug transgressions, Sonnen headlined Metamoris 4 in a grappling bout with Andre Galvao.

Despite his hubris in even accepting the bout, it wasn’t enough to carry Sonnen to victory. Galvao submitted him with a rear naked choke 13:49 into the fight.

In the night’s co-main event, current UFC heavyweight contender Josh Barnett utilized his catch-wrestling arsenal to submit Dean Lister with a neck crank just before the 20-minute time limit.

In Metamoris, if the bout goes the full 20 minutes without a finish, it is considered a draw.

Sonnen now will have to wait it out and see if there will be any further sanctions from the NAC. He is under suspension from Nevada, which limits him from fighting, although it seems to remain a question whether or not Metamoris is considered “fighting,” since it is strictly a professional grappling competition with no striking allowed.

Jeremy Botter, a reporter for MMAWeekly.com content partner Bleacher Report, earlier in the week stated that multiple sources confirmed that the NAC threatened to levy a $250,000 fine on Sonnen if he were to compete at Metamoris, although Sonnen’s lawyer, Ross Goodman, defended his client, questioning the commission’s jurisdiction over a competition that was not considered full-contact or a combat sport.
