Cage Warriors parts ways with two-time winner, UFC vet Aaron Wilkinson

aaron-wilkinson-3.jpgOn the heels of his TKO upset of Bola Omoyele a week ago, British welterweight Aaron Wilkinson will part ways with Cage Warriors Fighting Championship.

Wilkinson (11-6) stopped Omoyele (7-2) in the second round at Cage Warriors 60, which took place at The Forum in London with a main card streaming on MMAjunkie.com.

Promotion officials recently announced that Wilkinson has been let out of his exclusive deal with Cage Warriors early. The deal was scheduled to end in January.

“Aaron is contractually committed to Cage Warriors until January 2014, but we don’t have any plans for him to compete between now and then,” Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan stated. “We don’t intend to offer Aaron a new deal, so it makes sense for us both to part company sooner rather than later. I wish Aaron the very best with his career, which I’m sure will be a success on the back of a big win last weekend.”

“The Daywalker” got back in the win column with his win over Omoyele. He had dropped a unanimous decision to Alan Johnston at Cage Warriors 50 this past December after winning his debut with the promotion with a first-round rear-naked choke submission of Leigh Cohoon at Cage Warriors 48 in July 2012.

Wilkinson appeared on Season 12 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” fighting for coach Josh Koscheck. After winning his fight to get into the house, he submitted Marc Stevens to reach the quarterfinals. But there, he was submitted by Kyle Watson in the first round.

He went on to get one fight in the UFC at the TUF 12 Finale, but he was submitted by fellow cast member Cody McKenzie, who had been on Georges St-Pierre‘s team. But since that loss, he has gone 5-2 with all five wins coming by stoppage.

According to Boylan, Wilkinson’s contract remains valid until it expires in the new year, but the fighter is being allowed to pursue options with other promotions.

“We’ve got four more big shows scheduled between now and the end of the year, but all of the cards are already stacked,” Boylan stated. “So unfortunately, there’s no room for Aaron to fight once more before his contract expires.”

Cage Warriors returns with Cage Warriors Fight Night 9 on Oct. 25 in Amman, Jordan, a show that features Bruno “B.C.” Carvalho vs. Gael Grimaud, as well as UFC vet Che Mills and Bellator vet Ronnie Mann.
