Cage Warriors 64 weigh-in results: Five fighters miss mark on first attempt

danny-roberts.jpgThe scale was not kind to a handful of fighters on Cage Warriors Fighting Championship’s first event of 2014.

Five fighters missed weight on their first attempts Friday for Cage Warriors 64, including Danny Roberts and Nad Narimani on the main card. All were given two hours to hit their contracted weights.

Cage Warriors kicks off its 2014 campaign on Saturday with Cage Warriors 64, which takes place at The Forum in London. MMAjunkie will stream the main card live in North America at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT). Cage Warriors’ Facebook page carries a slate of preliminary-card bouts at 2 p.m. ET.

In the headliner, bantamweight prospect James Pennington (9-1) looks for his third Cage Warriors win and his fourth victory overall when he meets fellow Englishman Tait (7-2), a UCMMA veteran who makes his promotional debut on the strength of a three-fight winning streak. Both fighters were on the mark with Pennington weighing in at 135.3 pounds, while Tait was 135.9.

On the main card, Roberts was off by four-tenths of a pound for his fight against Juan Manuel Suarez. Roberts came in at 171.4 pounds, while Suarez was 169.1. Roberts was given two hours to cut the remaining weight. Roberts recently appeared on MMAjunkie Radio and said he had only missed weight once prior, but that despite a training camp during the Christmas holiday, he felt good about making weight for the fight. On his second attempt, Roberts was on the mark at 170.6.

Also on the main card, Narimani was only one-tenth of a pound heavy at 146.1 pounds for his featherweight fight against Benjamin Brander, who was 144.7. Narimani hit 144.9 pounds on his second attempt.

A trio of fighters on the prelims needed two more hours to make weight – two with reasonable cuts still to go, and a third with a big one. Kirsty Davies came in at 121.1 pounds for her pro debut at strawweight, which has a non-title limit of 116 pounds. Her opponent, Veera Nykanen, also making her pro debut, was 113.7.

Cameron Else was 131.9 pounds for his 130-pound catchweight fight against Spencer Hewitt, who was on point at 130.6. And Huseyin Garabet was a pound over at 137 pounds for his fight against Daniel Crawford to open the card. Crawford was 135.7. Both fighters could not cut additional weight and will surrender 25 percent of their fight purses to their opponents.
