Cage Warriors 58 results: Beslan Isaev taps out Viktor Halmi in first

Beslan Isaev (24-6) wowed a crowd of his countrymen, dominating Hungarian opponent Viktor Halmi (14-6) en route to a first-round submission win.

The welterweight bout served as the main event of Saturday’s Cage Warriors 58 event, which took place at Olympisk Arena in Grozny, Chechnya.

Isaev was in control from the start, claiming the center of the cage and delivering straight punches from the outside and powerful knees in the clinch. Halmi looked to move, reset and offer a counter plan, but his efforts fell short, and he absorbed a series of damaging blows. Looking to turn the tide, Halmi drove inside, but Isaev calmly locked in a guillotine choke, fell to his back and scored a tapout finish at the 3:27 mark of the first round.

Cutelaba DQed, Brum earns quick win

The night’s co-feature highlighted a pair of heavyweight prospects in 19-year-old Ion Cutelaba (4-1) and 21-year-old Michal Andryszak (10-3-1), but the contested ended in disappointing fashion.

Andryszak pushed through a few early punches and took the fight to the floor to start the fight. From there, Andryszak stood and drove in right hands until Cutelaba eventually escaped to his feet. The tide turned from that point, as it was Cuteleba who scrambled to top position in a grappling exchange. Unfortunately, as he unleashed punches to a downed Andryszak, he landed several illegal blows to the back of the head.

The referee stepped in to halt the action with 53 seconds left in the first, and when Andryszak was unable to stand, much less continue fighting, Cuteleba was disqualified.

In a bantamweight feature, Englishman James Brum (13-2) earned his seventh straight win with a first-round stoppage win over Ukraine’s Ruslan Abiltarov (10-4).

Abiltarov scored an early takedown as he looked to upset Brum, but it was not to be. As they pair scrambled back to the feet, Brum slipped to the back and brought the action back to the floor. Abiltarove covered and tried to defend, but Brum locked in a body triangle and slowly flattened out his opponent, worked in the rear-naked choke and earned a first-round tapout.

Buchinger, Kusch impress in early action

In middleweight action, Azerbaijan’s Bakhtiyar Abbasov (9-2) avoided the submission attacks of Brazilian Charles Andrade (24-13) en route to claiming a unanimous-decision win.

It was Andrade who looked dangerous early, working the fight to the floor and looking for submission opportunities. But as he slowed over time, the explosive Abbasov throw massive haymakers while repeatedly powering his way to top position. In the end, the control was enough to earn a decision win, 30-27 on all three cards.

Slovakian lightweight Ivan Buchinger (23-4) was floored twice in his bout with Jamal Magomedov (5-2) but still managed to pull off a third-round victory.

It wasn’t the highest-paced affair, but the action was tightly contested throughout, especially after Magomedov was deducted a point in the opening round for grabbing the fence. But with time winding down in the final round and the scores anything but certain, “Buki” Buchinger latched on to a triangle choke. While Magomedov sensed it coming, he was unable to create space for himself. Buchinger turned slightly and switched to an armbar, earning the tap at the 1:42 mark.

Ukrainian submission master Pavel Kusch (14-4) earned the 14th tapout win of his career, attacking the legs of Chris Scott (6-3) and locking in a heel hook at the 2:59 mark of the opening round.

Kusch took the fight to the floor early but was unable to keep Scott on the floor. However, a second trip to the canvas saw Kusch willingly fall to his back, turning quickly for the legs and locking in the slick submission that earned an immediate tap.

In the night’s first main-card matchup, Bagautdin Sharaputdinov (7-3) used a brutal ground-and-pound attack to slice open opponent Matt Inman (12-5) in the opening round, setting the tone for what looked like it might be a one-sided matchup. It wasn’t.

In the second, Inman was again taken to the floor but deftly swept to the top in a beautiful scrambling transition, and unleashed a barrage of punches. A stunned Sharaputdinov was unable to recover, and the bout was waved off at the 2:31 mark of the second frame.

On the preliminary card, Alex Enlund (8-2) used some slick takedowns to to get Sebastian Romanowski (7-2) to the floor, and once there he worked his way to a rear-naked choke that led to a win at the 3:44 mark of the fight. Right after that, Mohsen Bahari (6-1) one-upped Enlund by tapping Alexander Voitenko (9-4) with a rear-naked choke at the 3:21 mark of the first round. Grozny hometown fan favorite Khusein Khaliev (6-1) made easy work of Mihail Serdyuk (6-2). Khaliev took the fight to the ground quickly, bloodied Serdyuk up with ground-and-pound, went after a couple submissions, then mounted to land more punches, ultimately jumping to side control for an arm-triangle choke to the delight of the crowd. The final prelim didn’t have the excitement of the first three bouts, but England’s Liam James (8-5) won his second straight for Cage Warriors with a unanimous decision victory over Akhad Mammadov (4-2)
