Cage Warriors 53's Chris Scott a submission wiz, would happily take a KO

chris-scott.jpgGo ahead and call Chris Scott a submission wizard if you want to. He’s not going to have a problem with that.

But even though 100 percent of his wins have come on the ground, Scott knows what got him there, and that’s his hands.

Scott (6-1) on Saturday fights Mats Nilsson (9-2-1) in a middleweight bout on the main card of Cage Warriors 53, which streams live on MMAjunkie.com (4 p.m. ET) from Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. It will be Scott’s Cage Warriors debut.

“My record suggests that, yeah – all six of my wins are by submission,” Scott told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “I’d like to think (I’m well-versed on the ground). I’d like to hope so. The submissions have come about through the striking. You ground-and-pound someone, they give things up. And that’s how most of them have come about.”

Nilsson is no stranger to the ground game, either, though. Five of his nine wins have come by submission. But he’s been away from action for nearly a year. His most recent fight was a decision loss this past May to Tor Troeng, who recently made his UFC debut after Season 17 of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Before that loss, Nilsson had a five-fight win streak, including a submission win over UFC and WEC vet Tommy Speer at Cage Warriors Fight Night 3. But Scott is on a five-fight win streak, of course all as submissions.

So with Nilsson’s propensity to go to the ground, and Scott seeming to wind up there all the time, too, he’s not going to be jonesing to get back to his feet if they wind up on the canvas on Saturday.

“I wouldn’t mind it going that way,” he said. “I don’t know that it will. But I’ve seen quite a bit of his fights. He’s got his own website, so there are a lot of things he’s posted on there. I know he’s fought Tommy Speer and he did really try to apply his submission game on him. So if it goes the same way, I’d be happy with that. I don’t mind that.”

But like all submission wizards, there’s something he can’t stop himself from craving. And that’s a knockout.

Scott said, naturally, he won’t go out looking for a knockout on Saturday. But if that falls in his lap, he certainly won’t be crying over losing his perfect streak of submission wins.

“That’s on everyone’s mind, isn’t it really?” Scott asked. T”hat highlight-reel KO – it’s always the one you want. But they don’t always come about and if you go looking for that, you’re losing out on other parts of your game. If it comes, it comes – great. I’d be happy to get a KO.”
