CageSport Champion Anthony Hamilton Ready to Stand Throw Down with Anyone

Anthony Hamilton-CageSport26Following back-to-back wins to close out 2012, CageSport heavyweight champion Anthony Hamilton started off this year with his third win in a row by getting a 90-second arm bar submission of Will Courchaine at Rumble on the Ridge 27 in March.

“I’ve been trying to stay more active, but that’s been tougher as I’ve moved up the ranks, so it was good to start 2013 with a win,” said Hamilton. “(The fight) didn’t last too long, so I didn’t take any injuries, and it’s always good to get in and out of there in a good fashion, so I was pretty happy about it.”

The fight not only raised Hamilton’s winning streak to three in a row, it was also his third straight fight finishing a bout in less than two minutes.

When asked if he feels he can gauge where he’s at with such quick performances or if he has to do that during training, Hamilton replied, “I train a lot down at Jackson’s in New Mexico, so it’s always a good gauge to see where you’re at training with guys like Jon Jones, Travis Browne, Frank Mir and guys like that.

“And also the other side, when you step out there under the lights in front of all those people, you see if you can put it all together on that stage as well. So it’s a little bit of both.”

Not only has Hamilton’s success come from his improved training, but also he’s been driven to improve following a two-fight losing streak prior to his recent wins.

“Both losses have motivated me,” he said. “I realized that nothing’s going to happen out there that hasn’t already happened to me, so I just need to go out there, have fun and do what I know I can do.”

Hamilton will look to raise his record to 10-2 and defend his CageSport heavyweight title on Saturday when he rematches Matt Kovacs (8-10) at the Emerald Queen Casino in Fife, Wash.

“It’s been about a year and a half since he and I were inside the cage, so I’m sure he’s made a lot of improvements, as I have, and he’s coming to win, as I am, so I need to be prepared for everything and anything,” said Hamilton of Kovacs.

“There will be a huge difference in this fight because I’m not afraid to stand and trade with anyone. I’m confident we can stand there, throw down and have a good fight.”

Following his bout with Kovacs, Hamilton is slated to face Smealinho Rama at Maximum Fighting Championships 38 in October for that promotion’s heavyweight title.

It could be easy for Hamilton to get caught up too much in making sure he’s healthy to face Rama and not fight as hard against Kovacs, but as he told MMAWeekly.com, that’s not the case.

“I’d be lying if I said (the fight with Rama) is not in my mind, but everything’s going to take care of itself and whatever happens on Saturday night, happens,” said Hamilton. “I’m coming to win and I’m looking to do my very best and then after that, we’ll move on and take care of the MFC stuff.”
