UFC featherweight Brian Ortega tested positive for Drostanolone, an anabolic steroid, following his UFC on FOX 12 victory over Mike de la Torre on July 26 in San Jose, Calif.
As a result of the failed drug test, Ortega’s victory has been changed to a no-contest result. He has also been fined $2,500 and suspended for nine months. The California State Athletic Commission confirmed the drug test result and penalties to MMAWeekly.com following an initial report by Sherdog.com.
Every fighter on the card was drug tested, according to CSAC Executive Director Andy Foster, but Ortega was the only one of the 24 contestants to return a positive result. All drug tests were processed at the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, which is a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited facility.
Ortega initially had submitted de la Torre 1:39 into the fight. It was his Octagon debut and would have been the ninth victory of his undefeated career.
The UFC had not yet issued a statement regarding Ortega at the time of publication.
