Ben Rothwell vs. Ruslan Magomedov targeted for late-summer event, possibly UFC 177

UFC heavyweight Ben Rothwell (33-9 MMA, 3-3 UFC) is set to resume his career following a one-year suspension and will fight Ruslan Magomedov (12-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), according to a recent report.

Russian MMA website MMAboxing.ru writes that the matchup is set for UFC 177, though a source close to the event today told MMAjunkie that a date has yet to be finalized.

UFC 177 takes place Aug. 30 at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif. The event’s main card airs live on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. It’s headliner pits new bantamweight champ T.J. Dillashaw against ex-champ Renan Barao.

Rothwell received a conditional license this past May from the Nevada State Athletic Commission after serving a nine-month suspension from the UFC. The fighter submitted a urine test in April to demonstrate he is free of banned substances.

Rothwell received a therapeutic-use exemption for testosterone in advance of his previous fight, a meeting with Brandon Vera at UFC 164 that ended in a third-round TKO victory. But he was warned by the overseeing Wisconsin athletic commission and also suspended by the UFC when his testosterone levels were flagged as beyond the acceptable limits.

The fighter released a statement that attributed his need for testosterone to a car accident and accepted responsibility for coming in over the limit.

Since signing with the UFC in 2009, Rothwell has hopscotched between wins and losses. Magomedov, meanwhile, made his UFC debut this past May at UFC Fight Night 41 and earned a unanimous decision over Viktor Pešta. He has won his past seven fights.
