Freire’s replacement, Saad Awad (156 pounds), hit his mark at Wednesday’s Bellator 87 weigh-in for his showdown with fellow tournament debutant Guillaume DeLorenzi (155.2).
In light of Freire’s injury, David Rickels (155.4) and Lloyd Woodard (154.2) are now expected to occupy the headlining slot. The event takes place at Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant, Mich., and will also see Russian talent Alexander Sarnavskiy (155.2) lock horns with Brazilian kickboxer Thiago Michel Pereira Silva (154.6).
The evening’s Spike TV-broadcast main draw will also feature a duel between unbeaten prospect Will Brooks (156) and Season 7 alum Ricardo Tirloni (155.8). Though neither man stepped on the scale during Wednesday’s proceedings, both lightweights were cleared to compete shortly thereafter.
The evening’s undercard will also showcase a host of talent, as 15-fight pro Samuel Quito (169.4) faces onetime Strikeforce competitor Ben Lagman (170.8) at welterweight, and “Ultimate Fighter 12” contestant Sevak Magakian (155.2) faces once-beaten Jason Fischer (155.8) in a lightweight tournament alternate bout.
