Bellator 64 Recap and Results: Fan’s Take (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

By Hobson Lopes,

Bellator 64 featured the second title defense of the season, with Ben Askren defending the Bellator welterweight title against Douglas Lima. Also on the card was a featherweight tournament semifinal fight between two tough Brazilians and the first two fights in the season six bantamweight tournament.

Bantamweight tournament quarterfinal: Rodrigo Lima vs. Hiroshi Nakamura

This fight featured the undefeated Brazilian, Lima, fighting the gritty Japanese-born fighter, Nakamura.

When the fight began, Nakamura immediately took down Lima, who worked towards submission after submission. That was the story for the first three minutes of the fight before Lima was able to get the sweep and get back to the feet. A quick groin shot and these two fighters had a brief break in the round. When the action resumed, not much happened to finish the round.

In the second round, both fighters seemed tentative before getting together. Lima then connected with another low-blow and had a point deducted. When the action resumed, it was Lima who was the aggressor, continually looking to lock in a submission. The third round was more of the same, with Lima continually trying to get the finish while Nakamura countered and showed great submission defense.

Official Decision: Hiroshi Nakamura via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Bantamweight tournament quarterfinal: Travis Marx vs. Masakatsu Ueda

This fight featured two 34-year-old fighters looking to advance in the Bellator tournament. Marx came into the fight with an 18-3 record, while Ueda came in at 15-1-2.

The fight opened slowly, but after a little more than a minute, Marx landed a monster slam, but somehow, Ueda nearly caught a submission on Marx's arm. Marx was able to get back to the feet, where the fight spent the final couple minutes. The second and third round saw a lot of back-and-forth action, but it was Marx who looked like the winner when the bell sounded following the final round.

Official Decision: Travis Marx via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Featherweight tournament semifinal: Popo Bezerra vs. Marlon Sandro

This fight featured two talented Brazilian matching up, with the 13-1 Bezerra and the 21-3 Sandro. These two men are close outside of the cage, but both would love to advance in the tournament and were ready to do whatever they had to do.

In the early going, Bezerra was waiting for Sandro to come in to connect with counter-strikes, but Sandro was doing a great job of not allowing the knockout blows to come. The next two rounds were back and forth with both men landing solid shots, but neither man did serious damage to the other.

Official Decision: Marlon Sandro via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Bellator welterweight title: Ben Askren vs. Douglas Lima

This title fight featured the former collegiate superstar Askren, defending his title against the Bellator tournament winner, Lima.

This fight went 25-minutes, with Askren controlling the action for most of the fight. Lima had a nice run through the tournament, but was not match for Askren.

Official Decision: Ben Askren via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)

This may have been the most disappointing card I have ever seen in Bellator. It had great potential, but failed to live up to the hype.
