Bellator 106 live and official weigh-in results

michael-chandler-eddie-alvarez.jpgLONG BEACH, Calif. – MMAjunkie.com was on scene and reporting live from today’s Bellator 106 fighter weigh-ins, where all six fighters competing for Bellator titles hit their marks successfully..

The festivities took place at Long Beach Convention Center in California. Long Beach Arena hosts Saturday’s event.

In the main event, lightweight champion Michael Chandler puts his title on the line in a rematch against Eddie Alvarez nearly two years after he took the belt from him. The unbeaten Chandler weighed in at 154.8 pounds, while Alvarez was 154.5.

“I’m focused, I’m prepared and I’ll be your new lightweight Bellator champion of the world,” said Alvarez, who is returning after a lengthy contract battle that played out in the courts with the promotion.

“We’ve got two great competitors stepping in,” Chandler said. “This is the rematch everyone’s been waiting for, and this is what we do.”

The interim light heavyweight title is on the line in another rematch as Emanuel Newton tries to see if lightning can strike twice against Muhammed Lawal. Earlier this year, Newton knocked out “King Mo” with a spinning back fist, then went on to win the Season 8 tournament crown. But the two were matched up again after current champ Attila Vegh was injured and couldn’t defend right away against Newton, who came in well under at 203.4 pounds. Lawal was under, as well, at 204.1.

“I’ve been working really hard, the smartest I’ve ever trained,” Newton said. “It was an easy weight cut. I’m tired of talking, and I’m ready to do this.”

And in the event’s third title fight, featherweight champ Pat Curran defends his title in yet another rematch against tourney winner Daniel Straus. The two fought in 2009 on a regional show in Illinois with Curran scoring a knockout win. But this time, there is much more at stake. Curran was 144.8 for what will be the third defense of his title. Straus weighed in at 144.2.

“He’s been here for a while and been doing great things for a while,” Straus said. “But I have something to prove, and I’m going to prove it tomorrow.”

“All I know is I’m not losing tomorrow night. That’s all that matters,” Curran said.

Also on the main card, the “Fight Master” reality series tournament final takes place after an injury delay. Mike Bronzoulis (171) meets veteran Joe Riggs (170.7) for the tourney crown. And to kick off the main card on Spike TV, featherweights Mike Richman (145.5) and Akop Stepanyan (145.9) do battle.

Bellator 106 was supposed to be the promotion’s first pay-per-view event with a main event between former UFC champions Tito Ortiz and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. But an Ortiz injury scrapped the fight this past week, and the promotion elected to move forward with the show on Spike TV following prelims at Spike.com.
