Amoussou-Baker Final, Spiritwolf-Zaromskis Rubber Match On Tap for Bellator 72 in Tampa

The Season 6 welterweight tournament will come to a head during Bellator’s upcoming Summer Series, promotion officials announced Saturday, as finalists Karl Amoussou and Bryan Baker headline Bellator 72.

A rubber match between Marius Zaromskis and Waachiim Spiritwolf will also be showcased at the July 20 event, which takes place at the University of South Florida’s Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla. Additionally, the promotion’s light heavyweight tournament semifinals will be also be contested on the MTV2 broadcast, which marks the second of a trio of Summer Series shows to be hosted by the Chicago-based organization in June, July and August.

Amoussou, 26, easily dispatched Chris Lozano in the welterweight tournament quarterfinals this past March, blasting the Ohioan with a head kick and finishing the fight with a rear-naked choke in just 2:05. The Frenchman’s ride to the finals would become bumpier in the next round, where he edged the resilient David Rickels by split decision on May 18. “Psycho” owns 12 of his 15 career victories by either knockout or submission and has been finished just once in his six years as a pro.

“This is the biggest fight of my career,” Amoussou said in the official release. “I’m going to win this tournament, and then I’m going to win the belt. I’m coming for Ben Askren.” A two-time middleweight tournament veteran, Baker made the cut to 170 pounds in Season 6, taking a split decision from hard-hitting Brazilian Carlos Alexandre Pereira in the quarterfinals before earning a unanimous nod over UFC veteran Ben Saunders in the semis. “The Beast” has knocked out nearly half of his career victims and owns notable victories over Jeremy Horn, Joe Riggs and Matt Horwich, among others.

“I’m 100 percent focused on this fight and nothing else,” said Baker. “I want to make this a professional fight and just put on the best show possible for the fans. I know Karl is going to come out aggressive like always, and I don’t have much doubt this fight is going to end with a stoppage. I want this tournament championship more than anything, and I’m going to get it.”
