Although Frank Mir appears to have his next fight lined up, it’s just one name the former UFC heavyweight champion’s coaches see a few distinct possibilities.
MMAjunkie recently caught up with head coach Ricky Lundell and striking coach Angelo Reyes to discuss options for the somewhat-resurgent fighter.
Earlier today, we passed along a report that Mir (18-9 MMA, 16-9 UFC), who’s rebounded from a four-fight skid with recent back-to-back wins, could fight fellow ex-champ Andrei Arlovski (24-10 MMA, 13-4 UFC) at UFC 191, which takes place Sept. 5 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
According to the coaches, Mir, who’s No. 11 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings, simply wants to fight higher-ranked opponents. That’s why, in addition to Arlovski, champ Fabricio Werdum, vet Ben Rothwell and slugger Mark Hunt are also desired opponents.
