Aljamain Sterling recounts story of Floyd Mayweather trying to get his girl

The story of Floyd Mayweather showing up at a Las Vegas pool party and trying to pick up Aljamain Sterling’s girlfriend in May has been talked about plenty, but Sterling had been strategizing exactly how his small group was going to take on Mayweather’s massive entourage.

The 48-0 boxing champion showed up at a pool party where Sterling (11-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) and a small group were having drinks and began pointing at women, apparently suggesting that they should come down and meet him. When she declined, Mayweather persisted, continuing to point before sending a parade of associates up to try and convince her to meet the champion.

“After that, he sends a guy up there,” Sterling told Fox Sports. “So he comes up by the end, by security, and we come down there. I guess he was telling someone to call the girls and we both end up speaking to the guy. I was like, ‘I don’t think this guy realizes what he’s getting himself into.’ I don’t care how many guys he’s with, he needs to realize this isn’t the place where he just picks out any girl he wants and that’s not how it works over here by our section.

“He was like ‘You guys can both come over’ and I was like ‘No thanks, I’m straight.’ And at the end of the day if my girlfriend went, it’s kind of like — she can obviously find her bags outside the hotel room, if you get my drift on that. But, so he sends that guy over and I pretty much tell him like it is — I’m an undefeated MMA fighter, you’re an undefeated boxer. If you really want to find out what’s better MMA or boxing today, you can come over and we can figure this out.”

Mayweather’s camp sent over a woman after that in a continued attempt to get the two together, but was rebuffed once again.

Sterling’s version of the story is that he continued to try to get Mayweather’s people to pass along his message that they could settle the debate right then and there.

But Mayweather is known to roll with a big entourage that includes roughly 1,500 pounds of bodyguards. How was the No. 12 ranked fighter in the NOS Energy Drink MMA bantamweight rankings planning to deal with that type of obstacle?

Don’t worry. He had a plan.

“I had a gameplan,” Sterling told MMAjunkie Radio. “I had already started strategizing. We were up on the mezzanine. I was just thinking to myself, ‘These guys come over here and try to do some sh-t, they’ve got to all try to fit up there and I’m just going to dropkick somebody down the stairs and they can take out some of the other guys.’ Just take them out two by two. I was like, ‘This isn’t going to go well for us.’

It was me, (UFC welterweight champion) Chris (Weidman), (UFC light heavyweight Gian) Villante, Al (Iaquinta) had left. So it was me, Chris and Villante and Villante was the one telling me, ‘Uh, bro, maybe we shouldn’t do this.’ I was like, ‘No, f-ck that. I don’t give a sh-t.’ I said, ‘What are these guys going to do? I’m not going at them. That’d be stupid.’”

In the end, there was no brawl. Sterling got a story out of the situation, Mayweather found out that pointing at a woman isn’t always an effective pick-up technique – no matter how rich you might be – and Weidman got a photo op.
