Alistair Overeem Injured, Out of UFC 160 Showdown with Junior dos Santos

Alistair Overeem has suffered an injury and will be unable to compete against Junior dos Santos at UFC 160.

Sherdog.com confirmed the news Wednesday with a source close to the development. MMAFighting.com first reported Overeem’s injury on Wednesday evening. Overeem and dos Santos were slated to lock horns in the May 25 co-main event from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The evening’s main card airs live on pay-per-view and is topped by a heavyweight title rematch pitting reigning UFC king Cain Velasquez against former EliteXC champion Antonio Silva.

Overeem, 32, returned to the Octagon last month after serving a nine-month suspension handed down by the Nevada Athletic Commission when Overeem produced an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone level during a random drug test last year. “The Demolition Man” was upset by Silva in his promotional return at UFC 156, suffering a third-round knockout in a loss that served as the Dutchman’s first defeat since 2007.

Dos Santos, 28, also saw a large winning streak snapped in his most recent in-cage appearance, as “Cigano” was dominated by Velasquez en route to a unanimous decision defeat at UFC 155 on Dec. 29. Dos Santos began his UFC career with nine straight wins, capturing the heavyweight title from Velasquez in November 2011 and defending it successfully against Frank Mir at UFC 146 after Overeem was pulled from that matchup as the result of his flagged drug test.
