8 Fights Signed for UFC on Versus 2

Former Pride Fighting Championships lightweight titleholder Takanori Gomi will collide with “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 2 winner Joe Stevenson in a featured matchup at UFC on Versus 2 on Aug. 1 at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City. Eight bouts --- including the headliner between Jon Jones and former International Fight League light heavyweight champion Vladimir Matyushenko -- are now official for the event.

His promotional debut spoiled by a rear-naked choke submission loss to Kenny Florian at UFC Fight Night 21 in March, Gomi has dropped three of his last five fights. Once hailed as the world’s premier lightweight, the 31-year-old Kanagawa, Japan, native has 10- and 14-fight winning streaks on his resume. More than half (17) of Gomi’s 31 career victories have come by knockout, technical knockout or submission. His list of victims includes one-time UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver, the world-ranked Tatsuya Kawajiri, former two-division Deep titleholder Dokonjonosuke Mishima and Japanese standout Hayato “Mach” Sakurai.

Stevenson last appeared at UFC 110 in February, when he dropped a unanimous decision to “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 6 semifinalist George Sotiropoulos in Australia. The 27-year-old Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt has delivered 15 of his 31 wins by submission. Victories over two-time Bellator Fighting Championships lightweight tournament finalist Toby Imada, American Top Team’s Gleison Tibau and “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 5 winner Nate Diaz anchor Stevenson’s resume.

Meanwhile, fast-rising welterweights John Howard and Jake Ellenberger will collide in a pivotal main card showdown.

Anchored at the Wai Kru MMA camp in Boston, Howard will ride a seven-fight winning streak into the match. Unbeaten inside the Octagon, the 27-year-old knocked out Daniel Roberts at UFC on Versus 1 in March. Howard has not tasted defeat since he dropped a unanimous decision to former IFL middleweight champion Dan Miller under the Ring of Combat banner in November 2007.

Ellenberger has posted five wins in his last six bouts. The 25-year-old former Victory Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder stopped Mike Pyle on second-round strikes at UFC 108 in January and has secured 14 of his 22 career victories by knockout or technical knockout. Ellenberger has been finished only once -- by former Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Delson Heleno -- in 27 professional appearances.

UFC on Versus 2 will also serve as the middleweight debut for former World Extreme Cagefighting light heavyweight champion Brian Stann, as he squares off with Mike Massenzio on the undercard.

A decorated combat veteran and graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Stann last competed in February, when he dropped a unanimous decision to unbeaten light heavyweight prospect Phil Davis at UFC 109. The 29-year-old owns six first-round finishes among his eight victories.

Massenzio has not competed since he succumbed to first-round punches from C.B. Dollaway at UFC 92 in December 2008. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt under Edson Carvalho, the former Ring of Combat middleweight champion has secured more than half (six) of his 11 career wins by submission. Massenzio, a Teaneck, N.J., native, has never before lost back-to-back bouts.

Other matchups booked for UFC on Versus 2 include a welterweight bout pitting “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 runner-up DaMarques Johnson against Matt Riddle, a light heavyweight duel pairing James Irvin with Igor Pokrajac and a middleweight tilt between Rob Kimmons and Steve Steinbeiss.
